The landlocked fjord of Western Brook Pond is a rare sight, especially in our part of the world. Carved by glaciers, and home to plenty of waterfalls and wildlife, it’s worth the trip alone.
What to expect
Western Brook Pond fjord in Gros Morne National Park provides a dramatic setting for a boat tour. The Long Range Mountains, the northernmost extent of the Appalachians, contain numerous glacially-carved fjords. One of the most spectacular is the Park’s largest lake, Western Brook Pond. This 16 kilometre lake with a depth of 165 metres is home to Atlantic Salmon, Brook Trout, and Arctic Char, as well as an unusual colony of cliff nesting gulls.
There is no better way to explore this scenic delight than by taking the Western Brook Pond Boat Tour. On board, behold the spectacular glacier-carved land-locked fjord, waterfalls cascading from 2000 feet that often turn to mist before reaching the pond, billion year-old cliffs, and frequent wildlife sightings.
For the safety of all passengers, No Pets are Permitted on-board the boats. Service dogs will only be permitted with proper documentation.
The boat tour can be reached via Route 430, 27 kilometres north of Rocky Harbour. From the parking lot there is a 45-60 minute walk (three kilometres or roughly two miles) to the dock. This trail is apart of the $3 million dollar investment that Parks Canada is hoping to be complete by 2019. The trail is covered with Class B stone for 2018 but by 2019, it will be upgraded to Class A stone making it easier for walking. For those of you who have difficulty walking, please give yourself ample time to make the trek into the tour. The trail carries you over the fragile coastal plain, which was once located below sea level. Along the way, you can examine the variety of plant life, look for wildlife or read the interpretive panels dotted throughout the trail.
Located at dockside, one can find a sheltered waiting area, indoor washroom facilities, canteen services, gift shop, and several beautiful picnic areas.
Throughout the tour, which has been featured in many magazines and several television programs, we provide live interpretation to point out some of the geological and historical features of this wonder of nature.
